Everyday Essentials I Never Leave Home Without

Everyday essentials. What's in my pockets?

When it comes to everyday carry (EDC), most people think of tactical rigs loaded with gadgets and tools designed to cover any and all unlikely scenarios. That’s not me. Don’t get me wrong—I’m all for being prepared—but I also value practicality. My essentials are about things I actually use daily; no fluff, no filler, and definitely not so much stuff that it feels like I’m lugging around a pocketful of bricks.

Over the years, my preferences have evolved, cutting down on the things I don’t truly need while upgrading the tools that make a real difference. Here’s a look at what’s in my pockets these days and why each item earns its spot.

What’s Are My Everyday Essentials?

1. A Small Flashlight

Why I Carry It

My job at On The Spot often requires inspecting detailed work, like the quality of our detailing in low-light areas. Overhead lighting in garages and dimly lit spaces doesn't always cut it. A small, reliable flashlight ensures I never miss a detail.

Perfect Example

The other day, I was checking in between the seats of a car for missed spots. Without my flashlight, I would have missed an area that needed extra attention. Something as small as this tool helps me maintain high-quality work—and keeps customers happy.

2. A Microfiber Handkerchief

Why I Carry It

Technically, it’s a handkerchief, but I use it more as a lens-cleaning cloth. Whether I’m polishing my glasses or wiping down my phone screen after hours of use, it’s indispensable.

Perfect Example

You won’t catch me squinting through smudgy lenses during meetings or missing details on my phone screen. Honestly, it should be a mandatory item for anyone wearing glasses.

3. Mints

Why I Carry Them

No man should be caught with bad breath—period. It’s a simple tool of self-respect and consideration for others. Whether I’m stepping into meetings or catching up with friends, fresh breath is nonnegotiable.

Perfect Example

There’s no heroic story here—you just never know when bad breath can sneak up on you. Mints are the unsung heroes of my EDC.

4. A Benchmade Knife

Why I Carry It

This little tool might be the one I rely on most throughout the day. From opening packages to quick fixes on various projects, a sturdy knife is surprisingly handy.

Perfect Example

At work, we’re constantly unboxing supplies or cutting tough materials. My Benchmade knife has saved the day countless times. Plus, it makes me feel just that tiny bit more prepared for life’s random challenges.

5. A Slim Front Pocket Wallet

Why I Carry It

This genius $9 purchase has been the answer to years of battling uncomfortable back-pocket wallets, bulky designs, and the constant annoyance of pocket bulk. It’s slim, comfortable, and perfect for keeping just the essentials on me—cards, ID, and a little cash.

Perfect Example

I’ve tested everything from classic leather wallets to fancy MagSafe ones, and nothing beats the convenience of a simple, slim design. It’s the only wallet I’ve had where I forget it’s even in my pocket.

6. My Phone

Why I Carry It

Obvious? Yes. Essential? Absolutely. My phone does it all—communication, project management, taking notes, navigation—you name it.

Perfect Example

It’s the one tool that touches every part of my day, from checking work schedules in the morning to unwinding with some music or podcasts at night. And yes, like everyone else, I’m overly dependent on it, but that’s life in the digital age.

7. My SideKit

Why I Carry It

This compact little lifesaver came into my life via a Kickstarter campaign, and it’s easily one of my favorite “just in case” tools. It holds first-aid essentials like bandages, spare doses of my prescription medicines (for when I’m running late), ibuprofen, extra cash, and room for other add-ons as needed.

Whenever I have the opportunity to carry a bag, I transfer the SideKit into it to keep my pockets less cluttered.

Perfect Example

One time I ended up stuck in traffic on the way home, unable to get to my medicine on time. My SideKit had a spare dose, and problem solved. It’s also come in clutch plenty of times for first aid when bandaids were needed unexpectedly especially when my kids were younger.

Why I Keep It Simple

I know some hardcore EDC enthusiasts might think my setup is “too minimal.” But here’s the thing—I don’t carry for the sake of carrying. Each of these items has a purpose, and I use them pretty much daily. Overpacking my pockets with things I might need isn’t my style; I prefer having only what I know will make my day-to-day life easier.

This approach has simplified how I think about EDC. My choices aren’t about looking prepared or following trends—they’re about function.

What’s Next?

Over the years, my EDC solutions have evolved as I’ve refined what actually works for me. And while my “everyday essentials” have been honed down to the essentials, my broader setups (like my work bag, outdoor bag, etc.) carry their own loadouts for specific scenarios. Stay tuned for future blogs where I’ll dig into those setups. Spoiler alert—they include more fun tools, but with the same no-nonsense approach.

And if you’re thinking about building your own everyday carry setup, start small. Focus on what you, personally need every day—and don’t get sucked into the idea that more is better. A streamlined EDC is all about practicality, comfort, and making your life just a little bit easier.
