Summer Reflections: How Far I've Come and What I've Learned

How Far I've Come

There's something about summer that invites reflection. Perhaps it’s the warm, unhurried evenings or the sudden luxury of extra time. Either way, as we inch closer to the year’s final chapters, it feels almost instinctive to pause and consider where we've been, what we’ve overcome, and how far we’ve come.

This summer, I embarked on a personal journey of reflection, revisiting the challenges I’ve faced, the lessons I’ve learned, and the growth achieved through it all. Today, I’m sharing my summer reflections and insights with you. My hope? That my story inspires you to start your own journey of introspection and growth.

Overcoming Challenges and Transformative Experiences

Summer always reminds me of the hurdles I've conquered. I’ve faced financial instability, career pivots, health scares, and some truly humbling lessons about the meaning of self-worth and resilience. To be honest, I never envisioned my life taking the directions it has.

I recall a period when my life felt stuck in survival mode. Whether it was overcoming job loss during a financial crash, grappling with an illness that stripped me of my ability to care for myself, or shifting my music career into something stable for my growing family, every twist seemed insurmountable at the time. Yet, looking back now, it’s clear how these moments fueled my growth.

The common thread? Fear. Fear of starting over. Fear of failing again. But I taught myself an invaluable mantra that remains a lifeboat in stormy seas to this day: Don’t be afraid. Whenever fear crept in, I used journaling to process my hesitation, visualize solutions, and ultimately take the next step forward.

The lesson here is to remind ourselves that fear, while natural, is rarely permanent. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that fear often signals the start of incredible transformation.

The Power of Self-Care and Setting Boundaries

For much of my life, I was an “always say yes” type of person. Need someone to cover extra duties at work? I’m on it. Need free counseling at midnight? Sure thing. While this behavior seemed altruistic, it came at a cost. Eventually, I learned that saying yes to everything meant saying no to myself.

The antidote? Setting healthy boundaries. This was no small feat—I’ve always felt immense guilt about prioritizing my own needs over others’ requests. But I discovered something liberating in the process. By saying no to things that didn’t align with my goals or capacity, I gained more energy to focus on things that truly mattered, like deepening my relationships and taking care of my health.

Setting boundaries was transformational. For example, I introduced what I like to call my "third weekend." Every month, on the third weekend, I fully disconnect from work, phones, and the unrealistic expectation of being constantly available. It’s a simple but sacred practice that nurtures my mental clarity and prevents burnout.

I pair this habit with daily self-care practices, such as journaling and affirmations. Journaling helps me visualize my goals and process challenges, while affirmations remind me that prioritizing myself isn’t selfish; it’s essential.

The Beauty of Change

One of the most difficult lessons I’ve had to learn is that change, though uncomfortable, often opens doors to unimaginable opportunities. Moving my family to Missouri during a financially uncertain time was one of those moments. It felt like hitting the reset button on life, and I was unsure if it would be for the better. Yet, looking back now, I credit that move as one of the best decisions for my family’s happiness and stability.

Change doesn’t stop after one big leap, though. I've had to adapt to new perspectives, new roles, and even new versions of myself. The key is fully trusting the process. A valuable lesson I’ve carried with me is that even perceived failures are critical stepping stones toward something better.

Take some time this summer to think about the changes you’ve faced in your own life. What opportunities have they created? What growth have they prompted?

Financial Reflection and Aligning Values

I used to believe the only way to find stability was to work harder, earn more, and sacrifice personal joy in the process. But over time, I’ve realized that true financial satisfaction isn’t just about numbers on a balance sheet; it’s about aligning spending with values.

For example, I once thought happiness came from acquiring more stuff. But in candid reflections, I realized that experiences—not material possessions—hold the most meaning for me. A low-budget family beach trip can leave a longer-lasting impression than the latest gadget.

Another shift came through budgeting with “intention.” I no longer view budgeting as restrictive. Instead, it helps me direct money toward things that bring fulfillment, like learning a new skill, spending time with loved ones, or contributing to causes I care about.

What does financial balance look like for you? If you’re unsure, try reflecting on your most joyful moments. Chances are, what you’ll find is that true wealth comes not from hoarding resources, but from using them to enable what truly matters to you.

Open Minds Lead to Growth

One last, important reflection from this summer has been around the power of open-mindedness. More than once, I’ve found myself clinging to outdated ideas or perspectives. But life has a funny way of teaching us humility!

For me, staying open to the insights, feedback, and stories of others has been a game-changer. It’s hard to grow when you’re convinced you already know everything. Better yet, when you approach others with empathy and an open heart, you create opportunities for deeper, more meaningful connections.

This summer, I challenge you to have a conversation with someone who sees the world differently. Ask non-judgmental questions. Listen without planning your response. Who knows? You might walk away with a new perspective that changes everything.

Your Journey Awaits

Reflecting on this summer has been a rewarding experience. It’s easy to see all of life’s changes, challenges, and lessons as overwhelming, but when we pause to examine them, they often reveal hidden gifts.

Whether it’s prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries, rethinking finances, or opening yourself to change, there are so many ways to grow and transform. Each step you take, no matter how small, is progress toward becoming a more whole and fulfilled version of yourself.

Spend some time soaking in sunlight, sipping iced coffee, and asking yourself these timeless questions this summer:

  • What have I overcome?

  • What truly fulfills me?

  • Where do I want to go from here?

Lastly, if you’re unsure how to start or want guidance, I encourage you to grab a journal or lean into practices like daily affirmations. The wisdom and clarity that come from writing down your thoughts are unmatched. Here's to the incredible growth waiting for all of us.
